A Punjabi poem

Adeel is a professional translator. He brings Turkish dramas to Pakistani audience. He is the founder of Junulara Esperanto-Asocio in Nankana Saheb. And he is a poet. He showed me one of his latest creations, a poem about the recent turmoil in Pakistan. The poem talks about the unashamed political class who are finally getting out their villas and expensive cars to meet people. They have smiles on their faces, and they aren't ashamed to ask for votes. Adeel urges his fellow citizens to show wisdom and save their integrity and the country.

Here is the poem:

Shahmukhi

Gurmukhi

Where is FSI Courses?

That's the question I have been asking myself since yesterday evening. I made a mental note to myself to write about it. I forgot. Losing your job takes its toll. Anyway I am wondering why I can't access http://www.fsi-language-courses.org/.

I am currently reading a novel by Chimamanda Adichie. I am 12 chapters into the book. So far: there has been a second coup in Nigeria. Igbo killings have begun. Arize and her family is dead. Odenigbo is worried about Olanna. Mohammed is helping Olanna get to safety. Kainene's parents are in London. Richard is with Susan. And Ugwu is playing with the Baby. What is to come next is still a mystery. But what has happened so far in the book got me interested in Igbo culture.

The Igbos are a wonderful lot. I remember reading a long article about them, or the Kingdom of NRI a few months. Theirs was a kingdom without a king. The old Igbos lived in small village-sized republics. It was only after the British came, preceded by swords and followed by the bibles, that chieftains were imposed on these people. Even though Half of a Yellow Sun is set in the 1960s, it offers a glimpse into the history of these people. I will read more about them through books of Chinua Achebe.

I am telling this because this intrigued me so much that I wanted to learn Igbo. I immediately went to the FSI Courses website and found it was not there. (-_-) A little Google-ing showed the site has been offline for approximately one month. There is little else I know. I am currently not in mood of more researching. Maybe tomorrow.

=== Update ===

Fortunately I didn't have to search much. I am downloading the FSI Igbo course from here.

The Greatest Show on Earth

Eight Amazing Engineering Stories

Half of a Yellow Sun

12,200 word families

Took this 140-question test after watching Extensive Reading and Vocabulary Range (part one) of ProfAsAr.

The speaker in the video knows around 28,000 (I have forgotten the exact number) word families. That is significantly better than my disappointing performance of 12,200.

Fedora Linux mein LibreOffice kaise install karein?

Simon Olivier ka comment parh ke taish mein aa geya aur ye chhota sa text likha Roman Hindustani, ya Roman Urdu, ya Roman Hindi mein.

Got excited after reading Olivier's comment. So wrote a short text in Roman Hindustani here. This is about how to install LibreOffice in Fedora Linux?

Ekscitiĝis post legi komenton de Olivier. Tial skribis mallongan tekston en Roman Hindustani. Tiu ĉi teksto temas pri kiel instali LibreOffice-on en Linukson Fedora.

========================================================

Fedora Linux operating systems (OS) ki qataar mein sabase zeada jaane-pehechaane OS-es mein se ek hai. DistroWatch mein aksar top five most popular distros mein shumar hota hai.

Mere kheyaal se Ubuntu aur Linux Mint ke baad, desktops par ye dunia ka sabse zeada istemaal hone vaala OS hai. Lekin Ubuntu aur Mint ki tarah, Fedora ko working condition mein laana thora sa difficult hota hai. Is ki ek vajah ye hai ik Fedora LibreOffice ke saath nahi aata. Aap ko ise alag se install karna hota hai.

Main abhi Fedora 18 (Xfce, 64-bit) use kar rahaan hoon. Is mein halta fulka (less than 2 MB) sa AbiWord shamil hai. Lekin mujhe thora powerful word processor chaahiye, jo ki LibreOffice hai.

Ab sawaal uth-ta hai ki LibreOffice ko install kaise kiya jaaye?

Is ke kayi tareeqe hain. Ek asaan sa tareeqa ye hai ke aap LibreOffice ki official website pe jaayiye aur ise download kar lijiye. Ab ye kaam karega ya nahi, ye main nahi jaanta. Maine to terminal ke zariye ise install kiya tha.

Terminal ke zariye LibreOffice install karna thora mushkil to hai, lekin ye aapko qaafi aazadi deta hai. Jaise ki aapko poora suite install karne ki zaroorat nahi. Meri tarah aap sirf LibreOffice Writer aur LibreOffice Math install kar sakte hain.

Step one

(1) Terminal open kijiye.

Step two

(2) Ye command dijiye:

su

Terminal aap se aapka root password maangega. Root password fill kijiye.

Teesra step

(3) Ab ye sure karne ke liye ke aap sahi raaste par jaa rahe hain, ye command dijiye:

yum search libreoffice

Depending on your internet speed, kuchh seconds se kuchh minutes lagenge before you see a list of programs with LibreOffice in their name

Fourth step

(4) Ab ye command dijiye:

yum isntall libreoffice (agar aap poore ka poora suite install karna chaahte hain)

ya fir

yum install libreoffice-writer libreoffice-math (agar aap ko sirf writer aur math hi chaahiye)

Paanchvaan qadm

(5) Kuchh minutes ke baad, again depending on your internet speed, terminal aap se install confirm karne ko kahega.

App ko ye command deni hai

y

Step six

(6) Intezaar kijiye aur kuchh hi minuton (minutes) mein aap LibreOffice istemaal kar paayenge.

Suraksha chetavani (security warning) from AirTel

My mobile operator AirTel sent me a message on March 6. I didn't notice it until yesterday. It's a security warning from the company reminding me AirTel will never ask me any personal details, or bank passwords. People get messages of this kind everyday. So there is nothing special in there, except for two things.

First I am a DND (Do Not Disturb) customer. So I don't know why they are still messaging me.

Secondly, and this is more fun, the message is in Hindi-Urdu. The company has used Roman Hindustani to send its message across. The Roman Hindustani used doesn't have any diacritics, and is very similar in form to the SMS- or Facebook-lingo used by many here.

Here is the message:

(1/2) Suraksha Chetavanai: Yad rahe, airtel kabhi bhi aapki niji jankaari jaise bank account vivran, passwords aadi se sambandhit jankaari nahi mangta.

(2/2) Kripya, lottery/Inaam ke anuroode ke liye ki gai call, SMS aur +91 ke alawa anya ISD code se aayi missed call ka uttar na dein, ye fraud ho sakte hain.

Sender: AK-ARWALR
Received: 2013/03/06 19:49

Except for anuroode, which I believe means "to request", the rest of the message is clear. It is more on the Hindi side; notice "uttar" instead of more colloquial "jawab", "bank account vivran" instead of "bank account details", "sambandhit" instead of "related" and "jankaari" instead of "information."

These are minor issues.

What makes this message interesting, is that it shows a form Roman Hindustani is already taking shape. It's not perfect. It's not the best. But it works.

I have tried IAST with my sisters. They didn't like it.

(My sisters are fairly representative of most young Indians. They are What's Up, Facebook users who aspire to a idling career in a government office. They go to college but don't know a thing of what they learn. They want an Addidas or god-knows-what tag on their T-shirts, shoes... and they speak two or three languages but are fluent in none of them.)

What's amazing about the Roman Hindustani used by AirTel (perhaps others do that too) is that it works even with this bunch of people.

As far as I am concerned, I will not attempt to make another Roman-based script for Hindustani. Let's float with the waves and see where it leads to.

Anglerfish talks to giant squid in Persian

Exercise six of Iraj Bashiri's Persian for Beginners is about combining dialogues from lesson one and two. I loved doing this exercise. I have introduced two new characters and a new noun in this dialogue.

Here it is:

And here is the conversation in English:

Anglerfish: Hello !
Giant squid: Hi! How are you?
Anglerfish: Not bad. Thank you. How are you?
Giant squid: I am doing well.
Anglerfish: Who is that fish?
Giant squid: That fish is my food! ha ha ha !!!
Anglerfish: What's it called?
Giant squid: I don't know.
Anglerfish: What time is it?
Giant squid: I don't know.
Anglerfish: Goodbye!
Giant squid: Bye bye!

Kaj jen estas la dialogo Esperante:

Anglerfiŝo: Saluton!
Giganta kalamaro: Sal' ! Kiel vi fartas?
Anglerfiŝo: Ne malbone. Dankon!

Persian language

That was in December. I suddenly decided to learn Persian, and then equally suddenly gave up. It's been more than two months now, and I want to try again. In fact I have returned to Iraj Bashiri's Persian for Beginners.* That's an excellent course. I revised the first two lessons. I plan to revise two more today, and then move at a slower pace. I think it will be great if I could finish this 348-page 15-lesson course in two months. For the time being, I can only say:

My teacher Iraj Bashiri is good. His book is good too. [In fact] That book is better.

* Chapter 15 is unavailable. Do a little Google-ing or Bing-ing or DuckDuckGo-ing or what-not and you shall find that.

Regested beauty parlaur

I went to my grandmother's this Saturday. She lives with my uncle in a village named Sanaur near my city  of Patiala.

The thing that struck me the most, besides the primitive marketplace and poor internet coverage, was the near absence of English in everyday Punjabi. Also the dialect of Punjabi they use sounds rather queer.

Despite the near absence of spoken English and prevalence of desi Punjabi, the shops signs were nearly all in English.

Here is the one I particularly liked.

I clicked it while walking because I didn't want to get beaten by a bunch of villagers. I feared what they would think, and do if they saw me with a camera in front of a ladies' beauty parlour.

In Punjabi they write de instead of te in kiraye te mildi hai (available on rent). The English text shows a Punjabi influence. On rent basis.
